MRI is short for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Patients will typically lay inside an MRI scanner. MRI scanners are large, cylindrical machines which take a series of images and process these images via computer software.
The strong magnetic field generated within the machine temporarily aligns the body’s protons followed by radio waves which cause the realigned protons to emit signals that are detected by the machine.
Highly detailed images of the body’s anatomy are then generated using these signals.

Yes, MRI scans are generally considered safe for most people. Unlike other imaging tests that use ionizing radiation, MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of the body’s internal structures. However, there are some safety concerns with MRI scans, such as the presence of metal in the body, so it’s important to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
The length of an MRI scan can vary depending on the area of the body being imaged and the type of scan being performed. Some scans may take as little as 15-30 minutes, while others may take over an hour.
During the MRI scan, patients will need to lie still on a table that slides into the MRI machine. The machine can be quite loud, so patients may be given earplugs or headphones to wear. Some patients may feel a slight sensation of warmth during the scan if a contrast agent is used. However, MRI scans are generally painless and do not cause any discomfort.
